On a perfect day for rugby Aberdare were fast out of the blocks straight from the kick off. A planned move saw Conrad Gregory get to within 10 yards of the try line before Ellis Williams ran a great angle from deep and a perfectly timed pop pass from scrum half Iestyn Evans saw Williams cross the line, landing on his back before having the presence of mind to place the ball over his head to touch down.
Dowlais restarted but there was nowhere to go as Aberdare’s defence was impenetrable. Tackle after tackle saw the ball turned over and a quick counter attack from the pacey back line enabled Thomas Bowen to score another trade mark scorcher.
Dowlais restarted but they were no match for the hard tackling Aberdare. Alistair Francis Wilson, Andrew Payne, Thomas Bowen and Kyle Thomas Lloyd all putting in big tackles. Aberdare turned over again and got the ball to second row Morgan Jones who showed great pace for a lock with a gazelle like run to score in the corner for Aberdare’s third.
Dowlais tried again from the restart but it was a lost cause as great tackles from Rhys Thomas, Ellis Williams, Jayden Meade, Kyle Thomas Lloyd and Thomas Bowen forced them back. Aberdare turned over but a rare mistake gave Dowlais a scrum. They got the ball away but a superb tackle by Iestyn Evans on the Dowlais outside half resulted in a spilled ball which Aberdare pounced on. They put the ball through the lands and after a great pass from play maker Kyle Thomas Lloyd put deadly winger Andrew Payne in space and rest was history. A try for Payne, 4-0 to Aberdare at the break.
Dowlais had the ball for the start of the next period and finally managed to score with a great solo try from their number 15. But up stepped Thomas Bowen from the restart who decided anything you can do I can do better. Bowen took off on a solo run and after beating almost the whole Dowlais team, the coach, and couple of supporters, he dived over the try line to score his second of the game.
Dowlais then took advantage of a little Aberdare complacency from the restart and managed a second try. Aberdare went straight back on the offensive though with the whole team off loading brilliantly out of the tackles. They worked the ball to Riley Prosser who ran strong. She showed a great turn of pace and courted the touch line to score a fantastic try in the corner. 6-2 to Aberdare at the break.
Dowlais scored again straight from the restart with another blistering run from their number 15. Aberdare always had the ability to score though and struck straight back after great runs from Thomas Evans, Alistair Francis Wilson and Jayden Meade they got the ball to Ashton Phillips who also made ground. Quick ball from Iestyn Evans to Conrad Gregory saw the big loose forward smash his was over for another Aberdare try.
Some loose tackling from the restart allowed the Dowlais number 15 to score their 4th. But Aberdare attacked straight from their re start, going through the phases, then suddenly the ever present Rhys Thomas received the ball from 30 yards out. There was only one way he was going and after evading 3 or 4 tackles scored a great try in the corner. This was Rhys’s first try for his club and capped off an excellent man of the match performance from the young man.
Coaches Spencer Jones and Gareth Bowen were again pleased with another great win for the well drilled Aberdare team who were just too organised for their opponents in defence an attack.
