The Aberdare Snakes kicked off 2024 with a gripping clash against rivals Abercwmboi on a chilly January afternoon.
Despite Abercwmboi's confidence from a recent victory over Abercynon, the Snakes asserted dominance from the outset.
Within two minutes, a charge down in midfield set the stage for Aberdare's onslaught. Kian Stephens' quick tap penalty caught the home team off guard, and a sequence of skilful passes found Owen Young crossing the line, giving Aberdare a 5-0 lead.
Abercwmboi, determined to respond, applied sustained pressure, earning a penalty to narrow the gap to 3-5.
However, Aberdare remained composed, and Garyn Payne extended their lead with a successful penalty, making it 3-8 at halftime.
The second half witnessed stop-start play and minor disruptions, but Aberdare maintained their focus. Payne's precision added another penalty, bringing the score to 11-3.
Abercwmboi, refusing to surrender, fought back fiercely, scoring a try and converting to make it a tight 10-11 contest. The last 15 minutes were a nail-biting affair, with Aberdare showcasing resilience in defence.
Payne's third penalty proved crucial, securing a hard-fought 14-10 victory.
In the face of Abercwmboi's late surge, Aberdare's unwavering determination sealed a double win against their rivals.
The Snakes now turn their attention to a challenging encounter against Cambrian away on January 20, carrying the momentum from this well-deserved triumph.
