Owen Young – 1st XV Captain

It’s an absolute privilege to be asked to captain Aberdare RFC once again this season. To be given the opportunity to continue in the role, especially with the new coaching team now in place, is something I’m incredibly proud of and never take for granted.

I’d like to thank the coaching staff for their faith in me and the players for their continued support. Leading this team is a real honour, and one I approach with great pride and responsibility. Every player gives everything for the badge, and that commitment and character is what makes this group so special.

We’ve built strong foundations over recent seasons, and together we’re determined to keep raising standards, developing as a squad, and building on the success we’ve achieved. We have a talented group with plenty of quality throughout the club, and I’m excited to lead the squad into the new season and see what we can accomplish together.

Jarrad Rees – 1st XV Vice Captain

I’m absolutely chuffed to be asked to continue as Vice Captain for the upcoming season alongside my good friend Owen, who once again takes on the role of Club Captain.

It’s a great honour to be trusted by the new coaching team and I’d like to thank them for placing their faith in me as part of the leadership group for the 1st XV. It’s a responsibility that I’m proud to take on, and one that I’ll give everything to.

The commitment, work ethic and togetherness within this squad are second to none. We’ve got a group of players who are willing to work hard for each other and for the club, and that creates a fantastic environment to be part of.

My role is to support Owen, the coaches and the players in any way I can, helping to drive standards both on and off the field. We have a talented squad with plenty of potential, and I’m excited to play my part in helping the team continue to grow and achieve success throughout the season ahead.

Ben Bowen – Athletic XV Captain

I am extremely proud to accept the role of Athletic captain for the upcoming season. It is not something I ever expected to happen at this stage of my career, but having had discussions with the coaches in recent weeks I am honoured to be offered the chance to lead this exciting group into the new season as we aim for more league and cup success. 

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the excellent work done by Steff Moseley and Ethan Wynne as captains of the team over the last few seasons and will be leaning heavily on them for support and leadership this year. 

The Athletic play a key role in developing players for the first team and providing others with the opportunity to represent the club with pride. I look forward to playing a part in the development of whole squad and contributing to the continued success of this great club.

Ethan Wynne – Athletic XV Vice Captain

It’s a great honour to once again be asked to be part of the Athletic XV leadership group as Vice Captain. The last couple of seasons have been hugely successful, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being part of the journey, so I’m delighted to continue in the role with this talented, young and exciting squad.

I’m really looking forward to working alongside Ben as he takes on the captaincy this season. Ben is a fantastic leader and someone who will do a great job leading the group both on and off the field.

I’d also like to acknowledge Steff Moseley, who has been an outstanding captain over the last few seasons. The standards he has set and the way he leads from the front every week have played a huge role in the success of the squad. While Ben takes over the captaincy, Steff’s experience, leadership and influence will remain a vital part of the group, and I know he will continue to play a key role alongside us throughout the season.

Our squad has a fantastic spirit, togetherness and work ethic. We challenge each other to improve every session, support one another on and off the field, and take great pride in representing Aberdare RFC. I’m excited for what lies ahead and look forward to helping drive the squad forward as we continue to develop and build on the success we’ve enjoyed in recent years.

Following discussions with the coaching team, I’m pleased to confirm our Captain Owen Young and Vice-Captain Jarrad Rees, along with Gary Williams, Daniel Lewis and Garyn Payne as the Senior Leadership Group for the season head.

Firstly, congratulations to those selected. These positions have been awarded based on the respect they have earned, the standards they set and the influence they have within the group.

Our Captain and Vice-Captain will lead the playing group on and off the field, while the Senior Leadership Group will provide support to both them and the wider squad. Their role is to support players, strengthen communication between the players and coaches, provide honest feedback and help create the environment we all want to be part of.

As Head Coach, I see huge value in having experienced people around me. These individuals bring not only rugby knowledge but also life experience, leadership and perspective as men. Having that trusted circle around the team will help us make better decisions, support one another and continue building strong connections throughout the club.

This isn’t about titles. It’s about responsibility, accountability and helping drive the standards that will move Aberdare RFC forward. I genuinely believe this group will add enormous value to both the players and coaching staff and will play a key role in building a culture that can become something really special.

Congratulations once again to those selected. Now the real work starts.

Head Coach

I’m really pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Bowen as the Athletic team captain for the 26/27 season. Ben made a significant contribution to the team last season, both in his on-field performances and in his leadership off the pitch. His experience will help guide and support the younger players, helping the team to deliver the performances we have come to expect.

Vice-captain will again be Ethan Wynne, whose commitment and dedication to the team is second to none. He probably had his best season last year, with some outstanding performances, and is an inspiration to the group.

Finally, a massive thank you to Steff Moseley, who, unfortunately, due to work commitments, has had to step away from the captaincy role. He will continue to be a major part of the player group when available, and we all appreciate everything he did for the team over the last couple of years.

Everyone involved with the Athletic team is really looking forward to the start of next season, especially with a fresh influx of younger players joining the group from the youth ranks. It promises to be our best season yet, which is exciting for all involved. The future is bright; the future is Aberdare RFC!

Aberdare RFC are delighted to announce the appointment of Andrew Roberts as Head Coach for the upcoming season.

Andrew brings over two decades of experience within rugby as both a player and coach, having worked across community rugby, regional age-grade pathways, Cardiff Met’s performance programme, and with the Finland Men’s International Team.

Known for his player-focused approach, attention to detail, and commitment to developing both individuals and teams, Andrew’s coaching philosophy is built around creating an environment where players can learn, grow, and perform to their potential.

Andrew joins the club with a clear vision of building a positive culture, developing local talent, strengthening club identity, and creating a team that players, supporters, sponsors, and the wider Aberdare community can be proud of.

ANDREW ROBERTS – HEAD COACH

With over two decades in rugby as a player and coach, I bring experience from community rugby through to high-performance and international environments. My coaching roles have included Cardiff Met BUCS, Regional Age Grade rugby, senior men’s rugby, and the Finland Men’s International Team.

I am a WRU Level 3 Coach, currently undertaking elite coach mentoring, with specialist expertise in defence, contact area, breakdown  performance, and player development. My approach combines clear standards, strong relationships, detailed analysis, and modern coaching methods to help players improve, enjoy their rugby, and perform under pressure. Together, we’ll create an environment built on hard work, 

accountability, and continuous improvement.

MARTYN FOWLER – FORWARDS COACH

With over 25 years of experience in senior rugby environments across the Welsh Premiership and Championship, I’ve been fortunate to learn from some outstanding people and cultures. 

Within this timeframe, I’ve spent 18 years working within further and higher education. sectors, supporting player and personal development in academic academy, based settings. I’ve also been involved in age grade representative rugby for more than 15 years, helping young players grow and develop through the regional and international pathway. Level 4 world rugby certified, remaining committed to continuous learning and contributing positively to the game I love.

RHYS JONES – BACKS COACH

My specialist area is in attack and kicking, with experience across pathway and performance environments. I have worked with Wales U18s and U20s, alongside roles with Cardiff Met RFC, Cardiff Met Women’s Rugby, and Cardiff & Vale College.

I hold WRU Level 2 and am currently completing Level 3. My coaching approach is centred on building strong relationships with players and coaches, supporting them throughout their journey, while creating environments that challenge individuals to take risks and embrace challenges. I aim to develop confident, skilled players through clear standards, honest communication, and a genuine care for their progression, building a culture of trust, growth, and continuous improvement.

CHARLIE REBOUL – STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH

I have been involved in high performance S and C for over 4 years. Working with Cardiff Met men’s performance rugby teams as an assistant S and C for the 25/26 season.

I’m currently completing my UKSCA trainer award and have achieved a 2:1 in my degree of strength conditioning and rehab at Cardiff Metropolitan University. 

My coaching philosophy is rugby comes first then we find ways how to become stronger and fitter to improve our game on the field. My aim as a S and C coach is to improve physical attributes of each player, keep high standards, quality rapport with everyone and look to always improve and learn as much as possible.

We’re delighted to welcome Tia on board as 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐭 for our senior squad. With a strong background in injury prevention, rehabilitation, and athlete performance, Tia brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the role. We look forward to working closely with her throughout the season and beyond.

Here’s a little bit about Tia, her journey so far, and her thoughts on joining the club:

“I am a Sports Therapist graduate from the University of Gloucestershire, with a strong passion for injury prevention, rehabilitation, and optimising athlete performance.

In addition to my academic background, I have completed numerous CPD accreditations and additional qualifications, and I am continually seeking opportunities to expand my expertise and stay current in the field.

As an athlete myself, currently playing netball, I have a personal understanding of the physical and mental demands that sport places on individuals. This insight enhances my empathetic approach to therapy and performance support.

I have had the privilege of working in a variety of sporting environments and with athletes from multiple disciplines, which has broadened my clinical perspective and adaptability in practice.

My ongoing goal is to continue developing my knowledge and skills through further training and qualifications, enabling me to deliver the highest level of care and support to the athletes and teams I work with.

I’m incredibly excited to be joining Aberdare RFC as the new Sports Therapist and can’t wait to be a part of such a passionate and dedicated team.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the club’s continued success and support the players in reaching their full potential both on and off the field.

I’m really looking forward to getting started, building strong working relationships, and playing my part in helping the team stay healthy, strong, and ready for every challenge ahead.”

On a sun-drenched afternoon at the Ynys, emotions ran high as Aberdare RFC prepared to close the curtain on their first season in the WRU Championship East Division. 

More than just a game, this was a day to honour a club legend, Rhys Shellard, taking to the field one last time. Both sets of players and supporters stood united pre-kickoff, offering a heartfelt ovation as ‘Shelly’ was clapped onto the pitch for his swan-song appearance in blue and amber.

The Snakes began with purpose and intensity, immediately pinning Talywain back with sustained pressure. Their early dominance paid dividends in the 7th minute when a well-executed driving maul from a lineout deep in the visitors’ territory allowed Connor Lacey to peel off and crash over. Garyn Payne made no mistake with the conversion, giving Aberdare a deserved 7–0 lead.

The game then settled into a physical contest, both sides locked in an attritional arm wrestle for territory and momentum. It wasn’t until the 30th minute that the scoreboard changed again. Aberdare, guilty of a few unforced errors, ceded possession and field position, and Talywain made them pay by spreading the ball wide for a converted try to level the match at 7–7, where it stayed heading into the break.

The second half began with renewed urgency from Aberdare. Payne nudged the hosts ahead five minutes in with a superbly struck 40-metre penalty, restoring a slender lead. 

The momentum seemed firmly with the Snakes, and when a misfired Talywain lineout gifted Owen Young possession, Young needed no second invitation, scooping up the loose ball and scorching 60 metres to the line to score a stunning individual try. Though the conversion was missed, Aberdare stretched their advantage to 15–7 and looked well placed to see out the game.

But rugby can be cruel. What followed was a gut-wrenching final 25 minutes as Talywain found another gear. With Aberdare tiring and errors creeping in, the visitors struck three times with converted tries, exploiting space out wide. A quick fire 21-point blitz flipped the game on its head, and with the score at 15–28, Aberdare were left chasing a late try and conversion to salvage a losing bonus point.

Despite throwing everything at Talywain in the dying moments, the Snakes couldn’t break through, and the game and season ended in frustration. From an 8-point lead to a 13-point defeat, it was a harsh reminder of how swiftly a match can turn at this level.

The result was not the fairy-tale ending Rhys Shellard deserved but that’s sport.

Though the curtain falls on the 2024–25 campaign with a disappointing final result, we can reflect with immense pride on what has been a milestone year. Tasked simply with surviving our debut season in the WRU Championship, the Snakes did far more, securing a solid 7th-place finish and showing they belong at this level.

This journey has been one built on unity, resilience, and a full squad effort, from the 1st XV to the Athletic. Speaking of the latter, the club’s Athletic squad had a stellar year, lifting the Mid District A Division title and making it to the Semi-Finals of the Mel Davies Cup, a remarkable achievement for all involved.

Equally inspiring has been the emergence of youth. The U18s, many of whom juggled senior and youth fixtures, stepped up with confidence and quality. Their own season has been equally impressive, defined by passion and promise.

Meanwhile, the heartbeat of the club, our Minis and Juniors, continue to flourish. Every Sunday at the Ynys is a testament to the dedication of our volunteers, coaches, and families who help nurture the future of Aberdare RFC.

To everyone who has contributed to this unforgettable season, players, coaches, backroom staff, committee members, sponsors, members, and supporters, thank you. 

In the penultimate clash of the 2024/25 season, Aberdare RFC welcomed St Peters to the Ynys on a sun-drenched afternoon.

With memories of a dominant away victory in September still fresh, the Snakes were eager to repeat that performance but St Peters clearly arrived in search of redemption.

From the outset, the visitors imposed themselves. A penalty after 15 minutes gave them the early lead, and within minutes they added a well-worked try, with the conversion sailing through the posts to make it 0–10.

The pressure was relentless. Two more converted tries followed in quick succession, and suddenly Aberdare found themselves trailing 0–24 with less than half an hour played.

Things went from bad to worse as St Peters crossed for a fourth converted try, putting them 0–31 up and flipping the script from the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Aberdare, however, responded with heart just before the break. A flowing, multi-phase move, starting deep in the Snakes’ own half, saw Ben Miller, debutant Jac Lewis, Matthew Lloyd, Garyn Payne, Kieron Parry, Peter Richmond, and Leon Caviel all link up brilliantly for a well-deserved try. Payne converted, and the sides went into the break at 7–31.

The second half saw Aberdare chase the game with renewed energy. But despite their efforts to speed things up, St Peters cleverly disrupted the rhythm, slowing the play with stoppages and capitalising on a string of penalties against the hosts.

It took until the 65th minute for the Snakes to finally break through again, Connor Lacey powered over in the corner after a bouncing line out, and Payne added the extras to make it 14–31.

Ben Miller added a third try with a neat finish in the corner, and though the conversion was missed, Aberdare were within 12. 

A long-range penalty from St Peters stemmed any momentum before Miller struck again with a brilliant solo effort to end the scoring at 24–34.

A disappointing first half ultimately cost Aberdare, but the fightback showed character and promise, something the squad will look to build on next week in the season finale at home to Talywain.

Huge congratulations to Jac Lewis and Harrison James on making their 1st XV debuts.

Saturday afternoon at the Ynys saw a true double derby delight, as Aberdare RFC hosted old rivals Mountain Ash in a day packed full of passion, pride, and quality rugby.

The action kicked off with Aberdare Athletic taking on Mountain Ash 2nds.  Our Athletic side ended their season on a high, securing a strong 33–24 victory against the Old Firm, setting the perfect tone for the main event to follow.

Then it was time for the big one, Aberdare 1st XV vs Mountain Ash 1st XV, a fixture that always brings a special buzz. The Snakes looked sharp and focused all week, and that determination showed from the first whistle.

Aberdare started perfectly, with Garyn Payne slotting an early penalty to make it 3–0. However, Mountain Ash responded strongly, throwing everything at us in the opening exchanges. 

They took advantage of a quick tap penalty deep in our 22 to score the game’s first try, converted to lead 3–7.

But the Snakes weren’t rattled. Instead, they took control. A dominant scrum deep in Mount territory set the platform for Daniel Lewis to power over for our first try, converted by Payne to restore our lead at 10–7. 

Payne added another penalty before the break to make it 13–7 at halftime.

Aberdare came flying out for the second half, immediately putting Mount under pressure. Jack Payne found a gap at the ruck and, despite a near-miss for Leon Caviel, quick thinking at the resulting scrum saw Leon pounce for our second try. Payne converted to stretch the lead to 20–7.

Minutes later, more slick backline play created space for Jarrad Rees to cross for our third try, extending the lead to 25–7. 

The Snakes were relentless, and our bonus point was sealed after a superb team move, strong carries from Owen Young, Josh Bowditch, and Peter Richmond before Owen crashed over after sharp interplay. Payne’s conversion made it 32–7.

There was still time for one more special moment. Daniel Shanahan, earning his 200th cap, celebrated in perfect style by scoring from a powerful driving maul. Payne added the extras once again, pushing the score out to 39–7.

Mountain Ash did have the final say, scoring in the corner on the last play, but it was Aberdare’s day as we ran out deserved 39–12 winners — a performance full of class, discipline, and heart.

A huge congratulations to the entire squad for delivering not one but two derby wins on the day, a fantastic achievement!

Next up, we welcome St Peters to the Ynys on Saturday 3rd May for our penultimate game of the season. If the reverse fixture is anything to go by, we’re in for another thrilling, high-scoring encounter!
